The Top Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Position.

On the surface, this work might appear closer to an arduous academic challenge than the latest popular music project from an artist who just had a previous hit featured a global K-pop star. Broken into 4 different parts and performed in 13 tongues, it is a dizzying symphonic work that delves into female mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, often by way of the perspective of different women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward on this record, carried by the lush sound of a full orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer ambition alone makes the work of other pop stars appear rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That this album manages to escape overly intellectual chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, and complete credit belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first album to alchemize the past with modern styles, its scale are far greater here, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. What truly elevates this fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls the listener up in its tornado. When she is tearing your heart apart, the listener nevertheless want to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That playful energy shines clearly on the stunning Italian song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four minutes. Then, everything drops away, and there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes in like comedic force. The song immediately segues to the frenetic track driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of Lux is that you never exactly know—nor want to know—what you will go next."

Almost each track ends at a completely different place from where it began. One moment explores the fleeting nature of fame with a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Another, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused work starts out moody and brooding, with prowling beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir arrive to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Between Art and Accessibility

A key achievement on the album is straddling the line between radical innovation and mainstream appeal. This is little surprise that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy hits. One track sung primarily in English swells around a refrain that feels to collect more and more nagging hooks while it spins skyward. This trick gets echoed on another expansive track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album is pop on a grand level, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its inherent excess. It is an abundant source of buried treasure that requires time to fully mine but never seem like hard work. While some big releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux offers a lavish banquet at which the characters at it, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flit from discussions about ancient saints, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from music's truly endlessly creative visionary.
