The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation about the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
