No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national works. They were built at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
