Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
