Severe winds attaining speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused nearly 90,000 homes experiencing outages and compelled authorities to call off over 100 air travel services, as reported by domestic outlets.

People have been advised to remain inside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for further utility disruptions.

Broad Destruction and Emergency Response

This outage appears to be affecting households mainly in the South Island, though authorities say that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have reported that in some places structures have suffered roof damage, while utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gusts.

Within the capital, a person was lost his life after being hit by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Flights in and out of the city have been halted because of the gusts, and certain highways and community centers are not operating.
