European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
