Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
